A renowned association, BOMA Quebec is a leading reference in property management. Its mandate is to promote innovative practices aimed at improving the performance of buildings across Quebec. Among its many services, BOMA Quebec provides its members with a wide range of tools, training sessions, presentations and networking activities, in addition to staying attuned to changing trends and practices, in order to respond to the career imperatives and needs of building owners and managers.
The BOMA BEST® program, the BOMA Awards competition, the new Building Energy Challenge and our role as a partner in the OCVI2, an initiative developed by the Ivanhoe Cambridge Real Estate Chair at ESG UQAM, are four striking examples of our leadership and the benefits we offer to our members.
As the year draws to a close, we would like to shine the spotlight on other similar actions.
Staying Attuned to Legislation
BOMA takes part on a regular basis in revising regulations governing our industry. We make use of the expertise of our members to keep government and regulatory agencies informed of our concerns and to ensure fair representation. Our recent involvement in a new project to revise halocarbon regulations and our support for the Association des entreprises en maintenance du Québec (AEMBQ) regarding the impacts of Bill R-20 (Act regarding Labour Relations, Professional Training and Labour Management in the Construction Industry) are two good examples.
BOMA Quebec places great importance on continuing education and offers its members a broad range of workshops and training sessions. For example, recent presentations on the circular economy, BIM technology (Building Information Modelling) and using 5S methodology to optimize the effectiveness of management teams were part of the recent Integrated Technical Management Symposium.
Moreover, BOMEX 2019 featured presentations on intelligent buildings and the risk of cyber attacks, workplace conflict resolution, rating commercial buildings for accessibility for the handicapped and obtaining certification from the Rick Hansen Foundation, solutions for improving energy performance to become a Zero Net building, climate change resilience, the power of Big Data and much more.
Several new training sessions are also offered to support organizations taking part in the new Building Energy Challenge, including workshops on optimization of electro-mechanical systems (recommissioning) and making optimal use of the Energy Star Portfolio Manager platform.
More recently, BOMA Quebec concluded a collaboration agreement with TECHNORM, a leading codes and standards consulting firm specialized in building safety and with extensive expertise in forensic engineering. TECHNORM is offering a special rate to BOMA Quebec members as part of its professional development activities on offer this fall and winter. Take advantage of this great opportunity!
Social and Sustainable Development
The success of our BOMA BEST® certification program is now international! In addition to some 2740 certified buildings in Canada (410 of them in Quebec), BOMA recently certified the Canadian embassy in China, and a number of further certifications will soon take place in the U.S. and Mexico. Since its launch in 2000, this remains a very relevant program for the commercial real estate sector, as this international expansion clearly indicates.
In its efforts to provide services to its members, BOMA Quebec also works closely with the Social Development Association of Montreal to implement tailor-made programs that assist building managers coping with problems linked to homelessness. The Action Médiation program has proved useful in several buildings in downtown Montreal, and this hands-on approach is being actively pursued.
