Regulations concerning Chapter IV of the Safety Code, i.e. Elevators, Escalators and other Lifting Equipment: End of the transition period.
The six-month transition period following the implementation of regulations amending Chapter IV of the Safety Code, i.e. Elevators, Escalators and other Lifting Equipment, came to an end on January 12, 2025. This new chapter modifies a number of regulatory provisions that no longer meet the imperatives of safe operation and proper maintenance of elevators and other lifting devices.
The main changes resulting from this new chapter are as follows:
- The adoption of the new maintenance requirements contained in safety code ASME A17.1-2019/CSA B44:19 (modified, Quebec) ;
- The requirement to secure buried, single-bottom hydraulic cylinders on old hydraulic equipment installed before the code came into force. ACNOR CSA B44-1975 ;
- The obligation to maintain equipment in safe, good working order in accordance with the Code and standards in force at the time of construction or modification ;
- Clarification of the Code's scope of application as regards elevating devices for disabled persons living in a single-family dwelling.
Note that these regulations came into effect on July 13, 2024, and that a specific 36-month transition period was granted to owners to set up a maintenance control program, i.e. until July 12, 2027.
