Montreal, 25 April 2019 – At the BOMA Quebec Energy Symposium on April 25 at the Phi Centre in Montreal, registration results for Year 1 of the Building Energy Challenge were announced –157 buildings owned or managed by 39 organizations in the commercial real estate industry signed on for the Challenge.
It was with considerable pride that the president of BOMA Quebec, Bruno Turcotte, announced that the BEC had greatly exceeded its objective of 100 buildings for the first year of the competition.
The Building Energy Challenge sets an ambitious target for all participants, i.e. to reduce greenhouse gas emissions (GHG) by more than 10% over a four-year span (2018 to 2021).
Beginning in 2019, data collected by the participating organizations will be evaluated by a jury to determine the winners in three categories;
- GHG Target – This category is the very basis of the competition. By the end of 2021, the target for all participants will be to reduce GHGs emitted by their buildings by a minimum of 10% below the level it was at the time of registration in 2018. Winners will be determined by the percentage reduction achieved (10 – 14.9%, 15 – 19.9%, 20 % +).
- Improved Energy Performance– In this category, the percentage reduction of energy use intensity in buildings will be compared so as to identify those that reduced energy consumption the most by the final year (2021). Buildings are grouped by similar vocation, surface area and energy consumption and will compete against each other. Winners will be those that have reduced energy consumption the most.
- Collaboration– This category applies to building managers and tenants who register together and who demonstration ongoing collaboration. Registration is done online and the criteria evaluated are: collaborative practices, commitment, positive impacts and adaptability.
The Building Energy Challenge is an appeal to the entire commercial real estate industry, a call to do better and to instill a change in our organizational culture.
