Do arc flash and incident energy mean anything to you?
Arc flash is defined as the electric discharge produced from an electric arc and projected onto a surface that is a certain distance from the source. That sudden release of energy can cause substantial damage, fire or injury, including severe burns, damage to internal organs, poisoning, loss of hearing or sight and even death, not to mention destruction of equipment exposed to the flash. Arc flash is measured in calories per square centimetre (cal/cm²) or in joules per square centimetre (J/cm²). To define the energy contained in a potential arc in the component equipment of an electrical network, an arc flash analysis must be carried out.

The objective is to identify dangerous equipment so as to adequately protect personnel, but also to avoid overprotection during certain interventions where it is not required. In addition, better knowledge of an electrical network can lead to better management of maintenance and generate potential savings.

Our speaker Frédérique St-Arnaud is a projects engineer with Stantec who will demystify arc flash.

The following topics will be covered:

  • Understanding the electric arc;
  • Taking arc flash energy levels into account in design;
  • Mitigating or aggravating factors affecting the level of incident energy;
  • Frequent cases of high levels;
  • Advantages of arc flash analysis;
  • Solutions for mitigating high levels of incident energy.
