With rising temperatures linked to climate change, extreme weather events and severe climate conditions will become increasingly frequent. In Canada we'll be most affected by the following meteorological impacts: forest fires, (which affect air quality), extreme heat, freezing rain and flooding. Do we have the capacity to cope with these extreme events?

The presentation will help building managers identify possible solutions. Effective resilience focuses on work that can be carried out upstream, so as to limit downstream impacts.

Guest Speakers:

  • Joanna Eyquem from the Intact Centre on Climate Adaptation at the University of Waterloo, Faculty of Environment,

Climate change is already affecting building owners and managers in Canada. The bad news is that these impacts will intensify over time. The good news is that we already have the tools and concrete measures to manage and reduce the risks. This presentation will explain why we need to act now, and will illustrate some inspiring practical solutions!

  • Marc-Olivier Houde from WSP will present a lecture entitled Resilient, Sustainable Buildings – How do we prepare for 2050?

How can we adapt the current approach to future climate change? To what extent will building envelopes be put to the test? Can we build better, more resilient and sustainable buildings? Do we need to change the ways we maintain and renovate existing buildings? Why do we need to adapt our current approach? These and other issues will be outlined in this presentation, as they are questions that require reflection and discussion.

  • Isabelle Primeau from Premier Continuum will present a talk on business continuity, a key element of resilience.

Building owners and managers must think of resilience in the context not only of their operational capacity, but also of business continuity. But how does that fit into existing plans? What activities need to be prioritized, what service levels should be maintained? What strategies need to be implemented or reviewed? What are the expectations of tenants and other stakeholders?  In addition to these questions, examples and tools will be discussed during the presentation.
