ENVIRONMENTALLY
RESPONSIBLE
In September 2005, the Palais des congrès in Montreal
adopted an environmental policy and was awarded BOMA BESt
certification by BOMA Quebec, an acknowledgement of a commitment
and of concrete efforts to improve environmentally sensitive
management of buildings and organizations. The Palais des
congrès implemented systems that comply with new construction
and building standards in order to improve the building’s
environmental performance, particularly with regard to energy
consumption. The Palais des congrès is continuing its
efforts with this and other programs that encourage sustainable
events.
Very aware of the efforts made by the Palais des congrès
and the real estate industry, BOMEX® 2009 will promote
business practices that encourage sustainable development
by integrating several concrete measures that will help make
BOMEX® 2009 an environmentally responsible and sustainable
event.
The environmental policy adopted by BOMEX® 2009 and the
“green” objectives set for the management of this
event include the following:
Management of Energy Resources
- BOMEX® 2009 will promote the use of mass transit in
the host city.
- The choice of hotels was made according to whether they
are within walking distance for conference participants.
- Lighting levels will be kept to a minimum during set-up
and teardown.
Reduce Waste
- Promotion of the BOMEX® 2009 event and all conference
information will be transmitted for the most part by websites
and e-mails.
- All printed documents will be printed on both sides of
the paper.
- E-mail messages will include a reminder not to print out
the message unnecessarily.
- Online registration will be the norm.
- Distribution of documents during the event will be limited
and the use of CD-ROMs and websites will be encouraged.
- Exhibitors will be encouraged to reduce waste.
Green Purchasing
- BOMEX® 2009 will favour the purchase of local goods
(made in Quebec) for the event.
- The paper used will have a high content of post-consumer
material (bearing an EcoLogo watermark) and will be printed
with vegetable inks.
- Products that are over-packaged or that cannot be recycled
will be avoided.
Communications
- All participants will be made aware of the environmentally
responsible aspects of the event by means of websites and
e-mails, with concrete examples of what has been done and
what is being asked of exhibitors.
- Signage required for the event will be reusable or made
from recycled products.
- Plasma screens will be used for on-site messages and advertising
so as to cut down on the number of printed posters.
- "Green” initiatives will be singled out for
praise before, during and after the event.
